Data Collection & Storage

What We Collect

  • None by default: WeatherArchive does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information to our servers.
  • Local browser storage only: All user preferences, saved locations, and search history are stored exclusively in your browser using IndexedDB and localStorage.

Where Your Data Lives

  • Your browser only: Saved locations, recent searches, comparison presets, and user preferences never leave your device.
  • No server-side user database: We do not maintain any database of user accounts or personal information.
  • No tracking cookies: We do not use tracking cookies or analytics that identify individual users.

Data Retention

  • User-controlled: All data is stored in your browser and can be deleted at any time through your browser settings or our in-app "Clear All Data" button.
  • Automatic expiration: Weather data cached in your browser expires after 24 hours.

Third-Party Services

Weather Data APIs

  • Visual Crossing Weather API / Open-Meteo: Used to fetch historical weather data and climate information.
  • Data sent: Only location coordinates (latitude/longitude) and dates are sent to these services.
  • No personal information: We do not send any personally identifiable information to weather APIs.

Geocoding

  • Nominatim (OpenStreetMap): Used to convert location names to geographic coordinates.
  • Data sent: Location search queries (city names, zip codes) only.

Sun Calculations

  • SunCalc.js: All sunrise, sunset, and sun position calculations are performed client-side in your browser.
  • No external API: No data is sent to external services for sun calculations.

Ahrefs Web Analytics

  • Purpose: We use Ahrefs Web Analytics to understand aggregate website usage.
  • Data collected: Anonymous, aggregated traffic data with no personally identifiable information.
  • Privacy-focused: Ahrefs Web Analytics does not track individual users or create user profiles.

Data Export & Portability

  • Export your data: You can export all your saved locations, searches, and preferences as a JSON file.
  • Import data: You can import previously exported data into a new browser or device.

Your Rights

  • Access: You have full access to all data stored in your browser.
  • Deletion: You can delete all stored data at any time.
  • Portability: You can export your data as JSON.

Summary: WeatherArchive is privacy-first. Your data stays in your browser. We only send weather lookup requests (coordinates and dates) to weather APIs. No tracking, no accounts, no personal data collection.
